Because, simply, if all of Seattle read this book, Seattle would be a better place. I especially wish that this year's Seattle Reads selection, The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui, still fell under the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book" title. That original name is, obviously, better than "Seattle Reads." It clearly describes the intent of the program and lays out its aspirational tone. According to their website, the Seattle Public Library's Seattle Reads program is intended to "build connections between people through the shared foundation of reading the same book." When it was created by Nancy Pearl and leadership from the Washington Center for the Book, the Seattle Reads program was originally named " If All of Seattle Read the Same Book."

Gradually, Georgia accepts her identity, finds role models, and puts her energy into friendships-just in time for a rom-com-style denouement that affirms human connection in any form. After a lively, candid conversation with her pansexual roommate Rooney, cued white, about wank fantasies, and a crash course in asexuality from college-assigned mentor, nonbinary Sunil, who identifies as homoromantic asexual, Georgia concludes that she is aro-ace: “How could I feel so sad about giving up these things I did not actually want?” she wonders. As Georgia and her friends-Colombian British Pip, who’s gay, and Jason, who’s white and straight-rehearse a medley of romantic Shakespearean scenes in their theater group, playing Juliet (and, indeed, any attempts at kissing) makes her “feel sort of nauseated.” But Georgia’s not gay, and dating Jason only leads to hurt (his) and confusion (hers). Combining the plotting of a college sex romp with a queer sensibility that foregrounds aro-ace identity, Oseman’s frank, kindhearted novel follows Georgia Warr, a white British college freshman curious about finding romance of the sort she reads about in fan fiction. In partnership with Carleton University's Future of Journalism Initiative and journalism schools across Canada, Maclean's is striving to capture the richness of each life lost in elegant obituaries. Our goal: to pay tribute to everyone who has died of COVID-19 in Canada, and every Canadian who has died of the disease abroad. They Were Loved is an obituary project to commemorate thousands of coronavirus victims, as well as to mark this historic moment in Canadian history. Public health guidance around social distancing has resulted in restrictions around traditional mourning customs and rituals-heart-wrenchingly, many were unable even to say goodbye. Canada has already lost more than 20,000 people to the pandemic, with the number ticking steadily upwards each of those losses has cascaded through families and communities, leaving many more thousands bereaved. The magnitude of COVID-19's impact on Canadians' lives is difficult to fathom. With their problems so easily solved, and the mystery effortlessly unveiled, The Explorer fails to give the sense that the children are ever in serious danger, and the lack of intrigue weakens the narrative.ĭespite the unfortunate absence of suspense, Rundell makes up for the bland narrative by occasionally employing vivid language to describe the jungle: Throughout the book, their personalities are cemented any growth or change is infinitesimal.įred and his new friends navigate the jungle with relative ease, stumbling from one convenient resolution to the next. Fred is brave, Lila is smart, Con is a brat, and disobedient Max has an endless supply of snot leaking from his nose. It’s admirable that Rundell has written a story that’s not entirely comprised of white children however, all four children are exceedingly one-dimensional. Before long they discover something that suggests they’re not alone in the jungle. With no hope of being found or getting home, they go in search of food and shelter. The airplane crashes into the canopy of the Amazon jungle, and Fred later wakes in the wreckage to discover that he and three other children are alive but lost. Fred is on a six-seater plane headed to England from Manaus when the pilot stops breathing. Here is what the story is about: the series focuses on the notorious Nora Sutherlin, a part time erotica writer, part time professional Dominatrix who earns the big bucks down in the Underground scene. It was like reading a brand new book, but one I knew I was going to love and cherish with all the ruins of my poor broken heart! Oh my brilliant stars, this book was even better during a re-read! It’s been so long since I’ve picked it up that I could hardly remember what happened. And although I loved you, my beautiful girl, this is not a romance novel.” Nora Sutherlin – The Consolation Prize I would have liked to call this story of ours The Temptation but the word temptation, once the province of pious theologians, has now been co-opted by every third second-rate romance novelist. That ancient story – older than the Garden, old as the Snake. But that’s a cliché, isn’t it? Sadly, that’s all I have these days. I would say I’d create you from my heart, but I gave that to you when you left me. Sometimes I wish I were both God and Adam so I could tear out my rib and create you from my own flesh. I have only my words to render your likeness. Genres: erotica, romance, dark-erotica, horror, thriller Series: The Original Sinners (The Red Years) He was convinced his daughters had been switched somehow. At first their frantic parents were relieved to have them home, but then their father descended into madness. When they reappeared suddenly, shivering and naked but otherwise unharmed save for three identical scars along their necks, they had no memory of what they’d endured over the past month. Iris Hollow is one of three sisters who disappeared without a trace for a whole month ten years prior when she was just 7 years old. With that being said, I am immensely pleased to have stumbled upon a young adult horror novel called House of Hollow. Aside from Neil Gaiman, a story telling god, in my opinion, there are very few modern authors who can truly embody this classic gothic feel, where both the terrifying setting and the lyricism send shivers up your spine. Favorite classics include The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, a psychological horror masterpiece, and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein or, the Modern Prometheus. My favorite books are usually gothic in nature, dark and brooding but with incredibly beautiful prose. There’s something about the lurid appeal of the darkness and the fear of that which lurks in the shadows that is so incredibly compelling. You probably can’t tell yet from the things I’ve reviewed so far in this blog, but I have an intense love for the creepy and weird when it comes to books. “I’m outside with friends.” I kick an imaginary pebble. “No, I was just watching TV and dozed off. “Hello? Glyndon?” The older male voice speaks with its usual warmth. My fingers clench and I slide them against my shorts, then fish out my phone and tap the number called ‘Emergency.’Īnd then he picks up with a half-sleeping voice. I've been well aware of that fact since the first time I met him, but I’m one hundred percent sure now. I can only watch as he rushes through the crowd and heads to the middle of the ring. “Wait for me, baby.”Īnd then his touch is gone, and so are the remnants of my fragile sanity. I’d rather be insane than an ordinary fool.” He leans over and my heart stops beating for a fraction of a second as he kisses the top of my head slowly, gently. After all, insanity, evil, and ruthlessness are boundless and lawless. “Why the hell are you doing all of this? Are you…insane?” If you dare leave, I’ll send that cousin of yours into a coma.” “And you’ll watch every moment of it, baby. “That’s what you’ll get.” He brushes my hair again. My lips fall open, but I quickly recuperate. “I’ll lose it then,” he says without blinking. Health Insurance for Students in Australia: Detailed Discussion In another Cornelius Evazan tells little Luke that he and Ponda Baba don't like him, causing him to cry. In one such scene, the child Luke Skywalker uses a mind trick on a stormtrooper to convince him that C-3PO and R2-D2 "aren't the droids he's looking for," then complains about him repeating everything he says. Many of the scenes are scenes from the original trilogy, but the child forms of characters like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo inserted into familiar scenes. This non- canon look at the Star Wars films focuses on the idea of friendship. Jealousy, birthday parties, lightsaber battles, sharing, intergalactic rebellion and more all come into play as Brown's charming illustrations and humor irresistibly combine the adventures of our friends in a galaxy far, far away with everyday events closer to home. In this funny and sweet new book in the bestselling Darth Vader ™ series, Eisner Award–winning author Jeffrey Brown offers an intimate look at the friendships between best pals in the Star Wars universe, from Darth Vader and the Emperor to Leia and her Ewok pals, Han and Chewie, C-3PO and R2-D2, the bounty hunters, and other favorite characters. While some scientists defended the reality of supernatural phenomena, these sceptical humanists drew on ancient authors to mount a critique both of orthodox religion and, by extension, of magic and other forms of superstition. But is this justified? Michael Hunter argues that those pioneering the change in attitude were not scientists but freethinkers. Credit for this great change is usually given to science – and in particular to the scientists of the Royal Society. Yet in the eighteenth century such certainties were swept away. Among both educated and ordinary people the absolute existence of a spiritual world was taken for granted. A new history that overturns the received wisdom that science displaced magic in Enlightenment Britain-named a Best Book of 2020 by the Financial Times In early modern Britain, belief in prophecies, omens, ghosts, apparitions and fairies was commonplace. I realised really early on that despite watching and reading many books and movies centred around Greek mythology that I didn’t actually know that much about it and it was interesting to learn of the origins of Gaia and Kronos and how these myths and legends still resonate today in words and phrases we used.Īfter the creation of the modern gods that we know Zeus, Hera, Hades etc we get to see how Zeus overthrows Kronos who overthrew his own father and how Zeus became the all powerful god we know him as. From the very first sentence Stephen Fry’s comedic nature came through very clearly as he depicts the creation of the first Titans, their incestuous relationship and resulting offspring and the rising of the first Gods in Zeus and his siblings. Review: I was excited to pick up Stephen Fry’s new book retelling the Great Mythology since I have been a huge fan of all mythology since I was a child.
